Painting with a palette knife forces you to be loose and creative and to leave those tiny little brushes behind! We’ll work on some lush, colorful landscapes or paint from a still life setup as you learn to handle the knife like a pro. There are many advantages to using a palette knife and we’ll explore them in this workshop. You may not completely convert to using only a palette knife, but after this class I guarantee you’ll always have one in your toolkit for techniques you just can’t capture with a brush alone. 

Palette knife, a canvas and paints are provided for class use. If you have favorite colors, bring them, along with a palette (ie. Masterson palette) or pad of palette paper, a roll of paper towels, and solvent and a solvent jar if using oils. A limited number of table and standing easels are available for class use or you can bring your own to ensure you’re comfortable.

Explore the principles of shape, value and color and learn how they can be applied to create a mood or make a bold statement. We’ll review the importance of creating interesting shapes and masses in your composition before ever putting brush to canvas, then focus on using value, color, texture and edges to create paintings with impact. Experiment with abstract designs or bring photos of scenes you’d like to paint (landscape or still life).

Brushes, a canvas and paints are provided for class use. If you have favorite colors and brushes, bring them, and you must also have a palette (ie. Masterson palette) or pad of palette paper, a roll of paper towels, and solvent and solvent jar if using oils. A limited number of table and standing easels are available for class use or you can bring your own.
